Well, duh! Have you ever seen AC/DC use an effect pedal? No. But Aerosmith has, I bet you GNR has, Motley Crue, Metalica, Bon Jovi, Pantera, the Stones, KISS, Lynynrd Skynrd, SRV, Allman Bros.....I could keep going on and on, like the Energizer bunny, but you get the point. Also, a lot of those online "tutorials/lessons" on how to play metal say to get a good distortion pedal, then they usually name one or two explicitly.

God, why the hell does everyone use petals these days, YOU DON'T NEED THEM, get a good amp and thats all you need, I'll post a few pics of my equipment tommorow BUMPERZZ its true if you have a good amp, but sorry SUA, i wouldnt consider your amp good if you want tone without effects, you need a valve amp and you need to crank the shit out of it. angus uses marshall plexi's, 100% valve tone. but if you have a solid state like SUA, you will need a pedal for boosts for solos & for better distortion.

Exactly, which is why i am investing in pedals. Im too cheap to dish out the money for a tube amp to get the good tone. But back to not needing pedals. I do need pedals. I like to play music with heavy FX, like pink floydish kinda shit. Angus may plug right into the amp yes.... but what makes you think ACDC is the only thing i listen to and wanna play? Check out the pedals David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) one of my all time fav guitarists uses * Electro-Harmonix/Sovtek Big Muff * Electro-Harmonix Electric Mistress * MXR Dyna-Comp (pre-Dunlop 'Script' logo) * MXR Phase 90 (Used with Dynacomp for the famous "four note" Syd riff on Shine On Pts. I-V) * Demeter Compulator * Chandler Tube Driver * BK Butler Tube Driver * Boss CS-2 Compression Sustainer * Boss GE-7 EQ Pedal * Boss MZ-2 Digital Metalizer * Pro Co RAT Distortion * Heil Talk Box * Arbiter Fuzz Face * Ibanez CP9 Comprssion Sustainer * Uni-Vox Univibe * Vox Wah-Wah pedal * Dunlop Cry Baby Wah-wah pedal * Binson Echorec * Electro-Harmonix Small Stone * Digitech IPS 33B (Used for Whammy effects) * Ibanez Tube Screamer * Ernie Ball Volume Pedal * Pete Cornish all tube Pedal Boards and Custom effects * Pete Cornish Soft Sustain * Pete Cornish P-1 * Pete Cornish P-2 * Pete Cornish G-2 * Pete Cornish SS-3 * Pete Cornish ST-2 * Pete Cornish Line Driver * Pete Cornish Linear Boost * Pete Cornish Tape Echo Simulator (T.E.S) * Boss CE-2 Chorus * The EBow

Holy crap.
Let's look at the mathematical part of this debate: Pink Floyd = amazing; Pink Floyd = pedals; therefore, pedals = amazing.

Holy crap. Let's look at the mathematical part of this debate: Pink Floyd = amazing; Pink Floyd = pedals; therefore, pedals = amazing. not always, yes pedals are helpfull for boosts and better overdrive, but Pink Floyds music is much different to ac/dc, so they need to use crap like compressors. its all in personal taste. i have Ibanez Tubescreamer Marshall Guvnor II and it really can push my valve amp into metal territory if i want to.

Joe Perry uses pedals sometimes to get a breakdownish type sound, extended solos...switching songs...multiple guitars too.

yes hendrix used tubescreamers and a fuzzface. And Jimi used much more! e.g. Octaver....and (how could you forget this ;-)) a WAH-WAH! Just think Of Voodoo CHile. You can hear the octaver in the Purple Haze Solo. MAX

So angusaholic your theory about pedals being stupid.... is...stupid lol I guess so lol.... but I still think if you have a good amp you don't need pedals, sure if you want really cool effects like Pink Floyd, be my guest, or what about some cool effects that Van Halen uses... But oh well I'm a loser .

Well for a good basic raw sound, nothing beats a fucking good amp.
But for 95 % of all the rock songs (rock, pop, metal, anything else) I guess some sort of an effect would be at least needed.
